red dye n°13 / Midnight JJ : Night of Taiwan

Midnight JJ, aka. Juri Suzue, is a talented producer hailing from Japan. The past few years have been quiet, with one EP released in 2011 as well as a track on a 2009 compilation, both on the same netlabel. Nevertheless, these productions, along with other unreleased material on Midnight JJ's soundcloud, have grabbed the attention of the Red Dye Management.

This EP, specially commissioned by us, encapsulates the Midnight JJ sound perfectly : straddling a line between dub, ambient techno and experimental electronic production, Juri Suzue's music relies heavily on its slick yet expertly constructed rhythms to anchor vaporous synth chords and bits of ambiance that give all of her tracks a ghostly quality. But for all its ambient leanings, this is still music that rewards attention, with a keen sense of detail and style, where all the sounds are placed just right to create a delicate and abstract sonic landscape.

Like a Mark Rothko painting, if a Midnight JJ track appears simple on the surface, it reveals itself upon repeated viewings, and will really only unravel for the most patient of listeners. But all this attention given to atmosphere would be doing a disservice to the music, for the solid rhythms can work just as well in a club-oriented environment.

Versatility is paramount.

red dye n°12 / Secret Moon : Rust City

With this new LP from Secret Moon, the production alias of talented Britain-based musicians Lloyd Markham and Dylan O'Dwyer, Red Dye is entering phase two of its natural evolution. From now on, anything can be expected from the label. We always said that we released exactly what we wanted, but here we take this statement to its logical next step, taking the structure in a different direction.

"Themed around obsolescence, technological wastelands and abandoned sci-fi dreams" in the words of Secret Moon member Lloyd Markham, Rust City represents a foray into an alternate dimension, with a sound, a vision, a mood representative of the eighties experimental post-punk sound at its most cold and distant, with a very special otherworldly quality seldom heard in other records since that time. Fans of Stephen Nester, John Zorn, Freshly Wrapped Candies and Bob Ostertag should definitely check this album out. One for the late hours when strange shapes lurk in the shadows and the moon gives everything an eerie glow.
